onion soup

Onion soup is what we had for dinner last night. There are leftovers for Sunday night. I remember when I first had it. It was fancy food. Special. Stuff you only got at really good restaurants. That’s rather funny when you think about it. Onion soup is just a way to use up stale bread, scraps of cheese and a tasty way to stretch left over broth. really, peasant food.

I remember in Jr. High we were studying the Renaissance. Our teacher decided that we should have a pot luck that involved Renaissance style food. I chose French Onion Soup as my offering. The teacher was the only one who ate it – and she ate 3 bowls!!! Either way, my friend and I were trying to take the rest of the pot back to my house, and it somehow spilled in my locker. The whole hall stank of onions for a week, and my locker for the rest of the school year. It was terrible! Now, whenever I think of onion soup, all I can remember is the smell and I can’t bear to taste it.

What about the vichysois??!! (I don’t think I spelled that correctly!) We thought we were so sophisticated to eat cold potato soup every night at Basin Harbor.
