Bad Monkeys

February 13, 2008 at 8:30 pm (book review) (, )

I picked this book up because it is 1) bright yellow 2) taller and narrower that average 3) and a great title, Bad Monkeys ( by Matt Ruff). The first page pretty much hooked me. We meet Jane Charlotte who has been arrested for murder and claims to be part of a secret government organization called – Bad Monkeys. They find evil people, and kill them. The writing is vaguely reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut in the treatment of the mundane as surreal. From the beginning, you are never quite sure what is true and who is speaking the truth and the last few pages have so many twist and turns that I had to reread them to keep the story straight. An engaging, surreal romp.

I loved it! Excellent, fun book, and I could see it being made into a movie.

I think parts of it would make me dizzy — I kind of see it as a Pulp Fiction/Matrix mix.

Definitely… but could you imagine the special effects with the explosions and the shimmering in and out of space that “Bad Jane” did? It would totally rock.

It would be cool. DH just read Bad Monkeys. He thought the end was a cop-out , but although I didn’t really know what the ending was going to be, it seemed logical to me. ( I can’t believe I used the word logical when referring to this book)
