Libba Bray and the elite

Now, I have to admit I never understood the concept of  ‘hey, I can see having a beer with this guy, I should vote for him for president’.  First, not so sure the President should be a big drinker.  Two, I know lots ofpeopleI can drink with  and I’m really not sure any of them have  what it takes to be President.  And Three, I just think it takes brains, not beer-drinking to be President.  Today a friend link me to an essay by Libba Bray on why she wants a smart President. Now I’ve enjoied her novels ( I have one left) and reviewed them here, but this is a well written essay. She asks the question lots of people I know have been asking, “When did being smart and educated become a bad thing”?

It’s alarming that educated and literate become synonymous with “elite”

It’s the same kind of thought that gets people killed and thrown in prisons under totalitarian governments like China. It’s the exact same thing.

shun the guy with the brain because we don’t understand.. and better to shut him up then to let someone hear the message.

I spent my life learning to use my brain ( thanks mom and dad). And a good part of what I use my brain for is finding the experts I need to make my life better. My President — should be smarter than I am — I don’t have the expertise to pull us out of an economic crisis or a war — I want someone more knowledgeable than I am to set us on a better path.
