low blood sugar

February 7, 2009 at 3:52 pm (diabetes) ()

eww. no fun. It has been a loooong time since I have had a low blood sugar episode. shakes. Food fixes the basics pretty quickly. But then I feel like I have to sit for a bit. and sadly, the ‘low’ number was way higher than low used to be.

I don’t understand. What does this mean?

For someone without diabetes — blood sugar ranges 90-120 fasting. After eating , there might be some change, but not too dramatic.

Diabetics — those numbers can be range wildly. If the numbers are too high, ( too much food, too many carbs , not enough exercise), generally you feel sluggish , sleepy and oddly – hungry. Too high is dangerous over the long term.

too low — and for me I get cranky and I feel the urge to rip the arm off the nearest passerby and eat it. ( not really exaggerating there) . Sometimes I get shaky and feel vaguely nauseous. Other people get really disoriented. Too low is much more dangerous in the short term.

The fun thing — what number is ‘low’ varies from person to person, day to day, year to year.

Peter – the tearing-off-arms-and-eating-them response is not too far off, I think.

    Signed, has teethmarks….

Yes, not fun when egb’s blood sugar is too low.

So it sounds like your zone is tightening up, too low and too high are closer than they used to be – ugh. Not fun to try and control.

Actually I think my body is over reacting — it went way too high after eating
