Somehow I ended up with two vampire novels in my bag this weekend. Which meant I read one right after another. Marked by P.C. Cast and Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. Both take place in a world where vampires have always existed and there are schools for young vampires. I have to say that I like Marked better.

In Marked, Zoey finds out that she is a vampire — or a fledgling– she won’t fully become a vampire for a number of years. In fact, her body may reject the change and she might die. Vampires seem to be more involved in the world with humans. There are a lots of mystical elements — Cherokee myths, and old earth religions mixed into a contemporary world. I really like Zoey, her friends, and the adults in the book.

In Vampire Academy, the world is different — the vampires are separate from the rest of the world, and live in an old fashion hierarchy. Magic seems less important ( but I think that might change ) than fight strength. I have to say that I don’t really like most of the characters. Every one is supposed to be smart, but I don’t see a lot of brain power being used.

I loved Marked and can’t wait to read the second in that series. Vampire Academy, well , I will read the second, but not right now. And yes, both were much better than Twilight.

( and no, no one can turn into a bat in either book)
